OF CHAOS
AND ORDER

COLLECTION 004

WINTER 2024

there is an unrelenting dance of chaos and order- one begets the other, one needs the other - and this creates an essential dynamic tension. human beings have long been fascinated with order and disorder as we’ve sought to understand their relationship.

from the beginning of time in the biblical sense, humans were commissioned by the divine creator god, to order creation- working to take care of all god made in genesis chapter 2. in the hebrew language, chaos means without form and void, a perplexing mass or mixture. from the beginning, human beings were invited into partnership with god, being offered the gift of ordering and discovering a way through the world around us, but also within.

in mythology, we encounter chaos, the feral greek god of primordial lack of order present at the origins of the universe. i find it fascinating that myths tell a story of chaos giving birth to eros (love), and perhaps this supports our understanding of chaos being a gift that births love through the creative process.

systems theorist and physicist, fritjof capra, conceives these concepts as “a pendulum that is highly irregular, unpredictable, it goes back and forth but never the same way…the universe is evolving from disorder to order.” he describes chaos theory and complexity science as a shift in understanding systems holistically. capra showed how the principles of self-organization, emergence, and network patterns appear consistently across living systems at all scales. these fields have revolutionized our understanding of unpredictability and change, showing that while detailed long-term predictions may be impossible in complex systems, we can understand their overall patterns and behaviors. most importantly, they've revealed that nature tends to find order even in apparent chaos, through processes of adaptation and self-organization that create increasingly complex and resilient systems.

the essential role of chaos in systems is to facilitate movement towards greater resilience, organization, and coherence. so often chaos is viewed as a problem to be fixed. yet perhaps chaos can instead be viewed as a primal teacher, an inevitable force that moves in service of creativity and growth. how might we learn to trust the chaos that appears in our lives, allowing its ferocity to take us to unknown places of generativity and creation?

when i've created collections up until now, the final product is the end result. what the viewer does not see is the illusive chaos of the process. for these pieces, the process is the work as i invite the onlooker to see these pieces as a progressive whole. first, crossing the threshold of exploring the initial raw, energetic themes, and a frantic idea explosion, we are moved into an unfolding of a linear, strength of clear direction while maintaining a boundless complexity. i discovered a gentle prowess while birthing order from chaos- this process created an opening for this to surge forth as an invitation for others to explore this process within their own lives. we can be unmoving in deep trust, even as we are ever in process, a dance of chaos and order.
